A devastating road accident on National Highway 117 early Sunday morning claimed the life of a lorry driver and left at least 10 to 15 bus passengers injured. The collision occurred near Dhankal crossing, falling under the jurisdiction of Bishnupur police station.
The accident took place around 6:10 AM when a private passenger bus, traveling from Diamond Harbor to Kolkata, collided head-on with a lorry coming from the opposite direction. The impact was so severe that the front of the lorry was completely crushed, instantly killing the driver.
Locals immediately informed the police, following which officers from Bishnupur police station reached the scene and recovered the body. The injured bus passengers were quickly rushed to Amtala Rural Hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment. Some of them are reportedly in serious condition.
Due to the collision and the mangled vehicles blocking the highway, National Highway 117 remained shut for over 13 hours—until around 7:30 PM—causing massive disruption to traffic. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on either side, and emergency personnel worked throughout the day to clear the debris.
Eyewitnesses report that both vehicles were moving at considerable speed, and neither driver had time to react. The exact cause of the crash is still being investigated. Police are likely to examine road conditions, vehicle mechanical issues, and driver fatigue as possible factors.
Authorities are now calling for better traffic regulation and safety measures on this busy highway stretch. The accident has once again raised concerns about the high frequency of fatal mishaps along NH-117, especially near major crossings like Dhankal.
